The yellow "wood" on my house has grey pin head dots all over it. What is it and what should I do?
I live in a yellow house. The siding looks like that fake wood board that is impressed with a wood grain.
Today I was checking it out to see if it needed to be painted, which it does. While checking, I noticed thousands of gray dots the size of pin heads all over the yellow surface on the NW side (the side not hit with sunlight) of the house. Is this mold? Do I need to treat it before I paint it?
This is probably mildew and must be treated prior to painting. You can use a cleaner such as TSP (available at home stores and most drug and grocery stores). Follow instructions on packaging.
Another popular method is scrubbing area with a bleach solution (dilute with water). Then rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely before you begin painting.
To prevent this from happening again, you can add a mildewcide to the paint you are using. This should be available where you buy your paint, and is probably available in individual use pre-measured packets for just a few bucks.
Note: If the "dots" don't clean off, check closer and see if they are little holes. This could be indicative of a termite problem and you should talk to something in that field for advice.
