Steel Set
I want to buy my girlfriend a set of clubs. Would she benefit more from graphite or steel irons?
She is a beginner. I was going to buy her a set with graphite driver, fairway wood, hybrid and steel irons 6-pw. Would it benefit her more if the irons were graphite? She has hit pretty well with my dads steel 9 iron. Generally, do beginners benefit more from graphite or steel irons?
Beginner, female
Graphite. And a driver with at least a 12 degree loft. 5 wood, easier to hit than 3 wood, maybe a 21 degree hybrid to fill the gap between 5 wood and 6 iron, also good for maneuvering out of the rough with some distance. I use my 5 iron a lot around the green, it's great for bump and runs, I might think about including a 5 iron, and she will need something for steep bunkers....60 degree wedge or SW. (These clubs will be more beneficial in steel). Nothing better than a day on the course together...remember patience. =)
Benefits of Graphite Golf Shaft
Golf clubs have two main types of shafts: steel and graphite. The graphite shaft, although it has been around for years, came into form well after the steel shaft. It provides many benefits over its steel counterpart.
Light Weight
Graphite shafts are much lighter than steel shafts, allowing those who aren't very strong to make an effective, powerful swing. This kind of shaft is ideal for women or seniors who don't have enough flexibility or strength to generate a powerful swing.
Increased Swing Speed
Since graphite shafts are so lightweight, golfers can swing them faster and with more force, making for longer shots.
Shock Absorption
One of the worst things about steel shafts is that if a ball is mis-hit, it sends an uncomfortable shock up through the arms of the golfer. Graphite shafts absorb this shock, resulting in a much better feel.
Longer Shafts Equal Longer Shots
Most graphite shafts tend be longer than steel shafts. With a longer shaft, a player is able to generate more swing speed, therefore hitting the golf ball farther.
Torque
With graphite shafts, a weak player is able to generate more torque than he would with a steel shaft. Players with weak swing speeds need more torque in their shafts to generate more power.
